The Cure and a Kindergartener

I bought tickets to go and see The Cure last July. I am not much of a concert fanatic. I’m never the one to go and see shows by random bands just because I like shows, cause I don’t. The concerts I have gone to have been artists or bands that I am massively into at the time. But, I have for some time had a huge goal of seeing The Cure live.

Well, it turns out that I have two tickets and since the concert was rescheduled from last September to this May, I have nobody to go with and no place to stash my son for the weekend it will take place. There’s only one logical solution, take The Max with.

This could seem like a buzz kill. What kind of fun could be had with a child at a rock concert? I don’t know the answer to that, but I am willing to find out. Max knows plenty of their songs just as well as I do. And like a friend of mine said, when he is in college he will impress his friends by saying, “Yeah, when I was six, my mom took me to see The Cure” And his friends will reply with, “Dude, your mom must be so cool.”

But in reality, this is how I expect the night to play out:

Drive to arena and be forced to wake Max up, being as it is going to start at about his bedtime.
Drag the boy in the arena and buy him massive amounts of junk food before we find our seats.
Force him to put in earplugs so that he does not damage his ears.
Listen to about 3 songs before he gets bored and asks to leave.
Listen to about 3 more songs while he is begging to leave.
Leave, and buy some t-shirts on our way out the door.

I am going to assume this is the way things will go, maybe worse. But I will be able to say that at one point in my life, I was in the same building as Robert Smith.

Here’s a new song coming out on the 13th of May:

Dear Robert,
I love what you do to me as well. But seriously, please diet, you are not that much older than Brad Pitt and you used to be better looking than him.

Sincerely, Kristiane

Why I love My Mother

The following is a phone conversation I had about 2 weeks ago:

rrrrrrrrriiiiiiinngg (actually, when my mother calls, it does not make the ringing sound, but instead the theme song from Golden Girls plays)

Me: Hi Mom!
Mom: Hi. I am at a yard sale. You have been wanting a giant wooden fork and spoon to hang on your wall, haven’t you?
Me: Of course?
Mom: Ok, well I found one, and you know what? It’s only THREE DOLLARS!
Me: Yesssss.

She’s getting the fancy card this May. Thanks Mom.

Classic Sesame Street

The first seven or so years of my life my family did not have cable. The kids down the street had cable. I didn’t even understand what it was. When it came time to watch television, I sat in front of out K-Mart brand set for hours. I usually tuned into PBS to see if Big Bird had blown Snuffleupagus’ cover as an imaginary friend.

Now my son has Disney Channel and Nick and Cartoon network. I spend time with him viewing things like Sponge Bob and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. I cannot, no matter how much I plea with him, get him to watch Sesame Street. It’s probably for the best. That show has changed so much in the past twenty-five years I don’t even recognize it now. I decided to take a trip back in public television time. I longed to see what I could rustle up on YouTube as far as Sesame Shorts I could remember. (While wearing Rainbow Brite pajamas.)

Me and My M

Classic. The singer’s voice is somewhat disturbing when it gets low.

Baker #10

Without Sesame street no one would ever know how to count. Thank goodness for that klutzy baker.

Kid’s eating ice Cream

Does anyone else have that one weird thing they remember and cannot get it out of their heads decades later? My weird thing is the little boy pressing his friends nose and cranking his stomach in this video.

Harry the Horse

Clearly these were made prior to the War on Drugs.

Near and Far

Go do this in front of the mirror right now, just like you did when you were 4.

Teeny Little Super Guy

My favorite Sesame “sketch”.

I swear, my current boss is just like this guy.

Days of the Week Set to Music

The 2006 Christmas Season launched a commercial for a kid’s karaoke machine where the actors sang Friday I’m in Love by The Cure. This commercial was heavily seen on most of the children’s cable channels. (Disney, Nickelodeon etc.) By New Years my son memorized the words to the chorus and I gained a new fellow Cure fan, AND he lived in the next bedroom. Thus began the ritual of waking him up Friday mornings with my laptop in hand with the song playing on itunes.

A few months of this and Max decided we ought to choose a song for every day of the week. Here is the list:

Monday- Manic Monday by The Bangles
Tuesday- Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones
Wednesday- Waiting for Wednesday by Lisa Loeb
Thursday- Thursday by James MacDonald(This song is super lame)
Friday- Friday I’m in Love by The Cure

So, I am looking to add Saturday and Sunday to our queue, any suggestions. (Better suggestions for Thursday are appreciated as well)

The Daily Pilver

I am three feet from the finish line in my first year of College-o-Rama. Instead of doing a final edit of my final paper that is my final project for the semester I am going to play reporter.

MOUSE INFESTATION HAS TAKEN OVER PILVER HEADQUARTERS

Friday ended with a devastating realization that a thumb sized rodent had taken shelter from the cold and parked it’s hairy butt under the desk of resident reporter, Kristiane. Though careful attention has been made to wear hard toed shoes at all times, tensions are still high. Strategically placed poison has been nibbled by the enemy. As of yet, it has not been determined if the rodent will die, or if he/she is a super mouse (cont. on A-15)

ROOKIE RUGBY PLAYER SCARRED FOR LIFE IN HIS FIRST GAME

Fourteen-year-old Broderick King, of Edina (Cake Eater), Minnesota started his first rugby game on Friday but never made it to the final whistle blow. Shortly after the match began, he bumped heads with a fellow team mate, slashing the skin near his eye in the process. Like any good boy, he picture mailed photos to his concerned cousin from the ER where he received eleven stitches and bragging rights for at least the next three days. Not to worry amateur sports fans, Broderick will be in the game again this week.

WHY THE HECK IS IT STILL SNOWING?-an investigative report

This Thursday it will be May, which is the day you are all supposed to bring flowering gifts and play ding-dong-ditch with said gifts. But in Minnesota, there will be no flowers. Temperatures have been in the low 30’s in the St. Paul area with flurries as recent as TODAY. Likely outcomes of this extreme weather will include skipping over summer and heading straight into fall come mid July.

I Don’t Have an Accent

Sometimes we search things and come up with the total wrong results. And sometimes those results lead us to take unscientific tests in order to find out the most trivial of things. Or, is that just me?
When I was growing up I was fortunate enough to travel all over the US. And one thing was present in those journeys; people noticed my Minnesota accent. When I moved back here from the west coast I found out why it was so noticeable. But, according to the results of this test I am no longer strongest in Midwestern pronunciations. Click here and tell me what you get.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you’re a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Umbrella Rewards

Last week, as the snow ended and the rain began in Minnesota, my son decided that he needed an umbrella. So, I told him on Friday that he could get one on Saturday if he was good for the night. Good of course equals eating ones vegetables and brushing ones teeth and going to bed without fuss on time. He knocked the first two requirements out without effort.
When it came to bedtime, he had difficulties. My boyfriend Tim aka tg was over and when I told Max it was bed time and he resisted as he always does, I said in a stern voice, “You better be good if you want an umbrella tomorrow.” Well, without knowing the story behind it tg laughed as hard as he could. I mean, I just promised my offspring shelter from the rain as though it was a luxury, so I couldn’t blame him.
Max has the umbrella now, he loves it. He uses it whenever he is outside just in case rainclouds appear instantaneously. It’s fun to bribe kids with necessities.

Pilver: The Movie

This is a completely self serving post that I am doing while in the midst of ignoring my final projects that are due this week in school. I am sure when one Googles something to land them on this page they will scratch their heads and click away from it before they read the first three lines.

Most of my “blog friends” are people I have never met. Even of the ones I have, I met first online. So, I have no idea what you are all truly like or what you definitely look like. I decided I should make up personalities for you all based on teen characters from movies. So, if the posters on my blog were well known teen characters, they would be these:(in alphabetical order)

Billy

Jed from Red Dawn

Photobucket

Billy was a soldier, and I can totally hear him yelling “WOLVERINES!” in that thick southern accent of his.

dailytri

Paulie Bleeker from Juno

Photobucket

He runs. Bleeker run’s. He seems pretty nice, as does Bleeker. And, they’re both parents.

dohopoki

Donnie from Donnie Darko

Photobucket

I cannot figure out one true physical characteristic about doho. I mean, he eats, mostly hash browns. I know that. He doesn’t sleep enough. But he’s pretty much mysterious, Like Donnie.

Essaytch

Sandy from Grease

Photobucket

I just can imagine her breaking out in song at any given moment.

Greg

Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Photobucket

He’s always talking about going to the beach.

Guise

Long Duk Dong from Sixteen Candles

Photobucket

Guise is from the other side of the pond. I cannot think of a proper exchange student to place as Guise, so I will just use Long Duck Dong.

Jessica Marie

Laney Boggs from She’s All That

Photobucket

Jessica is someone I am jealous of, because literally everything she does or posts exudes beauty. I don’t posses that quality.

Keywork

Scott Howard from Teen Wolf

Photobucket

It’s all I got.

Kittymao

Heather from Heathers

Photobucket

IMO…Kitty kicks a lot of a$$. She could probably beat me up, but I don’t think she would. She’d be a perfect Heather.

Laurie Kendrick

Stiffler’s Mom from American Pie

Photobucket

Laurie’s the one exception to being cast as a teen. Not because of her age, but you know she likes ’em young. 😉

Matt

Dade Murphy from Hackers

Photobucket

Not sure if Matt could be considered a ‘hacker’, probably not. But seems that when he let us see pics of him, he had similar hair. And they are both computer nerds.

Michael

Mark Hunter from Pump up the Volume

Photobucket

This may have been the easiest. Michael you should go and illegally host radios shows as well.

Murphy

Elle Woods from Legally Blonde

Photobucket

Murphy’s a lawyer. He will appreciate this.

Poker Bob

John Bender from the Breakfast Club

Photobucket

Poker Bob does not smoke, but I bet he’d look right at home in that red flannel with ripped jeans sucking on a camel.

Squee

Terry Griffith from just one of the guys

Photobucket

Whenever there is a discussion on XE that I have to bow out of because of lack of knowledge, Squee is right there talking horror and video games with the boys.

TG

Patrick Verona from 10 Things I Hate About You.

Photobucket

tg likes this actor. And I can easily see tg dancing his way up the stairs of his previous high school.

Tony (aka critter12)

Joey from Blossom

Photobucket

I just keep hearing about these fabulous ripped jeans he owns as a homage to his favorite 90’s TV character. I have yet to see them.

I (don’t really wanna) Hate Mondays

Photobucket

We all know why Monday gets the bad rap, you’re tired from over sleeping and over staying up from the previous couple days and the six o’clock alarm come Monday morning is like taking a sheet of ice and placing it on your bare back. It stings.
Photobucket

However, I was thinking this morning as I was not at all wanting to get out of the bed and walk to my car at the start of the first day in Minnesota that feels like spring that I would like to like Mondays.

Tuesday through Thursday get a blah mark in most of our books. There may be a TV show you follow on one of those days and that will be the highlight of that day. Then comes Friday, and although this means work for those of us where “workday” is synonymous with “weekday”. Friday moods are always lighter. I mean, that’s why they are the days where you may wear jeans and all. Do “Casual Fridays” still exists? I have never worked a day in an office and I have no idea about the concept except for what I have heard. Moving on, the day is celebratory in that you will not have to work or wake up at any given time for two full days. This is very obvious in the restaurant industry as I have seen more people “treat” themselves to going out to lunch or by buying a latte on these days.

This pisses the socks off my feet. In theory, we are only allowed to fully enjoy 2 days a week and those remaining 5 are given away? Yes, enjoy is subjective as to what you enjoy.
And I like my job. Just not on Monday.

Taco Del Mar

When I was 15 and we moved to Washington, I fully expected for the entire state to be covered in flannel with blue hair singing along to Kurt Cobain. Instead we moved to Tonasket, which was covered in Wranglers with poofy-hair-sprayed perms singing along to Chattahoochee. However, weekend six hour trips to Seattle fed my grunge expectations. Especially when we ate at Taco Del Mar.
Photobucket
Taco del Mar was founded in Seattle and beyond the fantastic food they served, the employees were peirced in places I had never seen pierced before and the shaved headed young ladies and superbly green hair colored boys were indeed covered in tattoos and plaid flannel.
Fifteen years later and I am taking a drive to the old coffee shop in St. Francis here in Minnesota and I see the home of fish tacos in a strip mall in front of a strip mall next to a Wal Mart. It doesn’t seem right. Could this be the same company that I fell in love with in my youth? The same business that I took a clear blue easy test in to find out that The Max was on the way? The same place my immediate and extended family would gather after church at on Sundays?
It was. I happened to visit the same day the owner of the franchise was working the counter and she explained to me how they found out about the business, when they opened etc.
I bought two soft shelled chicken tacos with sour cream and guac and tomato salsa. I waited to try them until I was inside of my car so that I did not find out that the taste was changed and horrible and so that she did not see my disappointed face after biting into the overflowing shell.
It was terrific. I should have sat there at the counter and let the woman watch my eyes open widely when I embraced the beauty that soon began to spill onto my clean jeans. Tacos always do that, especially the good tasting ones.
So, if you are ever in Coon Rapids (Minneapolis’ equivalent of New Jersey) go to Taco Del Mar. You will be greeted with surf boards on the wall and patio umbrellas trimmed in grass skits. And be brave and try the fish tacos. Enjoy!
