Impatiently Waiting for Hole

Heard awhile ago that Courtney Love was going for it again with her band Hole.  Except she is the only returning member as she has most likely scared off the original posse.  I did love me some Celebrity Skin in the 90’s. Love is a scary specimen,  but her raspy voice is strangely soothing.  This one’s got the same sorta sound.  It may only be the nostalgia junkie in me, but I assume I’ll be putting at least a few songs from the new album on my play list.

Is this the end of the 80’s craze and the beginning of the grunge revival?  Or has it already started and I am just one step behind?  I have heard the term ‘neo-grunge’ thrown around in recent days.  Either way, I’m digging the flannels out of storage.

I Suck at Finding Sharp Tailed Snakes

Once again this week, I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Bureau of Land Management.  The last time we were repairing cattle fences and found a whole bunch of poop. This time around was a bit more lively.   There’s a snake that’s not endangered, but may find itself on the list soon. Our mission: Find them.  Find one.  Find any sign of one.  You get the point.

This is what they look like, stole the pic off GIS.

The snakes we were after live in and under rotten and fallen trees. I was given a quick lesson on the snakes and a slightly longer lesson on what to do if I came across the scarier rattle snake.  Then we took off. All day I was crawling on the riverbank tearing apart logs and trying to figure out what poisen ivy really looks like.  The location we were surveying is in the Yakima River Canyon, and it’s crazy beautiful.

Near the river, it is lush and wet.  There’s brush and thriving vegetation and this is where we expected to find the little guys.  I wasn’t seeing any snakes, but I did find the craziest centipede I ever saw.

We traveled a little ways away from the river, where is was dryer and there were less fallen trees.  Here, we rolled rocks over looking at this point for ANY reptiles at all.  Once again, I found something pretty spectacular, but it was not a snake.

What you are looking at is a scorpion.  I found two. In total, the survey group found four.  Scorpions dance too.  Luckily they danced after I moved my hands away from the reach of their stingers.

We were having zero luck finding snakes, so we moved even higher up the canyon into the dry, desert like ground.  There are cacti everywhere and perfect spots for the lovely rattle snakes to bask in the sun.  After only a few minutes one woman found a rattler, sitting peacefully.  Myself and the other snake searcher headed over to take a look at the snake.

Being as I am timid of anything that contains venom, I unwisely decided to take a long loop around to the nest and in the process stepped right over a bull snake.  They look similar to the rattler, but are harmless.  That got my blood pumping and I was on high alert.  I gingerly climbed up further, still taking the round about way in order to not walk face into the rattle snakes nest.  Ten feet before reaching the nest I placed my foot directly into another rattler’s nest and pissed him off royally. He shook his tail at me with that familiar sound I had heard a million times before, but only on television.  I found a taller rock and stood on top yelping like a little girl.

“STAND STILL!!” was yelled my way a few times and I calmed down and watched the dangerous critter disappear.  After it was out of sight, I changed my course and followed the biologist’s path to the first found snake so I could get a look.

It was amazing.  I was standing, looking at a rattle snake.  He was calm and happy all snuggled up with himself.

Pretty soon after that we changed locations and kept on looking for the elusive sharp tailed species.  Never found one.  Apparently the last time one was seen in the area was over thirty years ago.  Even where there’s plenty sharp tails, they are difficult to find because they do not come out in the open, instead, spend their time in the ground and in fallen tress.

So, I suck at finding sharp tailed snakes, but I’m awesome at locating wildlife with deadly venom.  I’m strangely proud of this.

Radiology Christmas

The Max:     Do you know Santa’s address?

Me:              Yup. The North Pole

The Max:     That’s it?

Me:              Well, it’s not like anyone else lives there.

The Max:      I suppose.  I am going to write him a letter.

Exactly nine months before Christmas my son wrote his letter to Santa.  I read it anxiously.  Hoping that Santa could provide whatever toy or game was going to be pined for all year long.  Never expected this:

My confusion was obvious to The Max as I read the letter.  Max simply explained, “I want to see the inside of my body!”

Of course, that’s every child’s dream.

Still Learning.

I haven’t worked in 41 days.  My last absence in employment was in 2001, when The Max came into the world.  There’s substance in  maintaining a  routine.  I miss it.  I am, however, enjoying the freedom of creating my own daily to-dos.  I’m discovering what I’d would do if I had all the time in the world.  Also, I am learning what an entirely different lifestyle is like.   Taking pictures of every small thing is an activity I have time for now.  Getting enough sleep is the norm.  Also:

You can have a favorite bathtub in the whole world.

You can not see people for years, and nearly pee laughing at the same things you laughed at before.

Cat’s with head trauma get morphine.

Getting your picture taken with Stacey Blades is funny.  And you can enjoy any music in the world if you are with the right people.

You can email people you’ve lost, but it would have been better to say it all earlier.

My mountain climbing iPod play list is ever changing, but always has “The Final Countdown”.

It’s really easy to not go to Target, when you have no money.

I will never have the desire to do dishes, no matter how much free time I possess.

Tim Gage was a friend of mine…

My heart is filled with devastation today.  Tim lost his battle with cancer this morning.

A few years back God flexed his sense of humor muscle and allowed two stubborn and internet addicted people to meet.  Right here on this blog, Tim posted as ‘tg’.  It’s still there, on the psst… page.  From that point on, Tim and I shared emails and instant messages seemingly ’round the clock.  We discussed movies, friends, our mutual love for writing… we chatted about everything.  Tim could debate like none other as well.  Usually I’d give in and change topics, as I knew I’d been whipped.  I cherished those few rare occasions when he’d stop and say, “I’m wrong.”

Tim had a longing to be honest and logical about everything.  After his diagnosis, he confessed he was thankful it was him, but he worried about his family and how they would take it.   During his first round of cancer drugs, he appeared to be fine with the exception of the effects brought on by the drugs.    I was optimistic.

Tim called himself the world’s youngest grumpy old man and joked that cancer would run out of his body after a bit of time with his stubborn self.  And for awhile, it seemed to be doing that very thing.  The cancer progressed very little at first.  Life continued almost as normal.  And as things go, Tim and I stopped seeing each other.

Though things had changed between us, our online chatter continued.  The discussions went on and we merged back into a friendship that was nearly exclusively online.  But Tim was there, always.  Some days we talked for hours.  Sometimes there were only a couple sentences exchanged.

If I asked how he was feeling, I would always get a straight and often heartbreaking response.  His health was deteriorating, and his spirits were often low.  Tim spoke often of a depression he could not shake and while I did my best to encourage him, I knew the depression was ever present.

The week I left Minnesota, Tim had been in the hospital.  He was at home the day I moved, and I told him I wanted to stop by and probably give him an awkward hug.  Tim hated hugs. 🙂

About an hour before we had planned on meeting up, I received a message from his sister letting me know he had been admitted to the hospital once again and that he would not be there.  I debated stopping by, but Tim hated visits when he was ill more so than hugs.  I left.

Since moving I chatted with Tim very little.  He told me it was difficult to sit up and type and he felt weak all the time.  Our last conversation revolved around my new kitten and the cone she wore for her stitches.  Tim said I must have found a pretty nerdy cat.  That was it.  That was the last time I heard from him.

There will always be a last conversation with the people you know.    Never thought the kitty/cone discussion would be it.  He’s gone.   Right now I want to love so strongly the people in my life.  I want to squeeze The Max until my arms are worn out.  I feel as though I have extra emotions with no outlet left for them.

I wish for peace for his family.  They are a huge part of who he is.  He has two amazing sisters, he always spoke highly of them.  Amber was like everyone’s mother.  She is caring in a way you don’t see often.  She and April took care of Tim until the end and he was in the best hands because of it.  April was ten years younger than Tim.  She is feisty and smart.  She and Tim acted together in plays and it was awesome to see them interact.  I know how badly I hurt right now, and I cannot imagine how much they are suffering at this time.  If I could, I would want them to know how highly I think of them.

Tim was an amazing person.  Tim was an wonderful actor and award winning playwright.  Tim was an awesome brother, uncle, and son.  Tim was always so good with The Max.  Tim Gage was a friend of mine.

Soon. But for real. ;)

OK, that title was a cheap shot.  And if you don’t know why it was a cheap shot: It would take far too long to explain.

I have, at all times, a list of blogs I am ‘working on’.  One in ten actually get written.  But, now, I am pausing them all.  The master plan is to launch thepilver.com on June 1st.  So, in lieu of beginning to write topical blogs until then, I am saving them and going to carry on with the journal style posts I have come to loathe myself for in the past couple years.

I am amazed that after years of pretending like I was going to do something with the site, I am really really doing it.  I am also amazed at the tiny cans of soda the Coca-Cola and Pepsi companies are putting out nowadays.

Nice job!  Now I actually finish the can.

Isolation

I’ve attempted to write this blog a couple dozen times since entering the title six days ago. How do I write it without sounding like a whiny baby?  The Max goes off to school at 7:30 each morning and is gone until almost 4:00 in the afternoon.  All of that time, I am alone. The first week was great. The dishes and laundry were started right away and then I was off trying to find a job or exploring the towns nearest to me.

However now, while I am not flat broke, I am down enough in funds that I fear spending money. Gas and groceries are my only monetary outlet. I found a job, it does not start for a couple weeks. I have been searching for other jobs, mostly for my own amusement, in the mean time. Most of the jobs I am not qualified for, I only figure I am doing something

Quite a bit of time last week was spent staring at the computer screen hitting refresh on facebook as though something wonderful might appear if I waited five more minutes. My ambition to whip the house into shape was stalled and my chores dwindled down to doing dishes once a day.

I need a kick to the face. That sounds painful.

Yesterday, we climbed the highest peak behind the house. It took a little over and hour, it would have taken 45 minutes if I were in better shape. On the way we saw thirty deer or more. Coyote poo was everywhere. We climbed on rocks and found pack rat nests. At the highest point there was snow on the ground and I could see my breath. Looking out towards the towns, I saw a few houses, apple orchards, and mountains all around me.

Here’s a deer, holding its ears out and staring right at me.

Top of what will be known as Mount Pilver…as soon as I make the flag. I cannot believe this is LITERALLY my backyard.

In the past month I have come across black widows, bats, coyotes, owls, deer, and even a scorpion. (AHHH!) My eyes have not seen a single sky scraper, taxi, or friend (other than relatives).

I miss so much from Minnesota.   I left a lot of wonderful people. I left a fun and decent paying job.  I know I can have that here as well.  I guess even changes that you hoped for take  time getting used to. Here’s to embracing it!

Stan’s Merry Mart

Ever walk into a store and feel as though you have stepped into a time warp?  As though, the entire building the people inside and the contents of the store could be from any decade in the past fifty years?  If you want to experience such a phenomenon I suggest you go visit Stan’s Merry Mart.

Stan’s is a discount retail store like Wal-Mart or Target except for the time warp aspect and the fact that there’s only one and not millions of locations.  Their motto is, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!”  I had to buy miscellaneous bits and pieces for my new home and decided to give it a try.  The mid-century retro signage has been intriguing me for days.  It seemed like a perfect opportunity to check Stan’s out.

Upon walking into the store I had no less than three people greet me and ask if I needed help.   I was on a mission to find large sheets of plastic so I let one of them know my quest, she showed me directly where it was located.

After checking out the plastic and gathering the random items I needed, I knew I could not just bolt out of the door.  I had to explore.  I figure if  ‘They don’t have it, I don’t need it’ also meant there must be things I needed that I may not know about.  Like plastic beaded curtains.

I resisted the urge to drape the beads around myself, but it required the discipline of a monk.

Other things I needed, which I never knew about

DIckies!   I cannot believe they still make these things!  Or maybe they don’t and they have been hanging there for thirty years.  Something else that has been there for several decades…

…these shoes.  Somehow I think over time they migrated into the wrong box.  I have a difficult time believing these are steel toe.  There were piles and piles of old shoes like this.  Next time I drive the DeLorean into the store I am going to explore more deeply the ancient shoe variety.

One thing about Stan’s Merry Mart is that organization comes second to providing great products.  In more than a few places I found piles of things that appeared to be back stock that were mish mashed together on the saleroom floor.

Here we have a variety of winter items.  My guess is you are to close your eyes and buy the first thing you grab.  Try not to  reach too deep, you’ll knock over everything.  Just take whatever is on the top.

One great thing about where this shop is located:  There are oodles of stores with fantastic signage from the mid 20th century like Stan’s.  The areas of the town that are not plagued with Applebees and Old Navys, boast west coast style of architecture which keeps me feeling like I am still exploring a new culture.  I don’t quite feel at home, but like I am taking a vacation for a really long time.  The feeling will pass.  It”ll be good, I want to feel at home.  ‘Til then, I’m loving the holiday!

Po-tay-to, Po-tah-to

I’ve spent my years fairly evenly between living in cities, suburbs, and small towns.  While the idea of living in one area for one’s whole life is intriguing to me and I think it sounds nice, my nomadic lifestyle has been good to me.  One living situation that (until this week) has been foreign to me is living in the boonies.  And crap, it’s been a hoot so far.

I wake up in the morning and bottle a cup of coffee, climb the mountain and sit on a rock and look at this.

I now live out of town.  There was a good chuck of my life that I never knew it was possible to live outside the city limits, I figured all areas of the world were within one city or town.  I think this means I cannot vote for a mayor.  And more immediately I cannot make a phone call.  I have a cell phone, it’s lovely.  I can order a pizza from the internet it provides and I can find my way to the coffee shop with the gps it boasts.  I cannot use any of those features, however, when I am living on a mountain with a signal that constantly says, “Searching…”

Last night I stepped out my door to grab a few things out of my car and I heard not one but a pack of coyotes howling.  They may have been howling at the other thing I heard, a really loud owl.  These critters were not far off at a distance where I could enjoy the soundtrack, they were on our mofo property.

There’s black widows in the sagebrush, there’s rattlers on the hill and there’s eagles swooping around the tops of the trees.  I have to drive twenty minutes or more to find the nearest town and even then the gas stations close at 9pm so craving ice cream in the middle of the night if out of the question.

So far, I love it.

While the outdoorsy nature side of things is an adjustment, the technology, or rather lack of, is a whole other bag.

We have the internet, as proved by this post.  However, the internet is coming to me via satellite and after I run through so many megabytes a day it shuts down.  Trying to keep up with The Office on hulu is out of its capabilities.  No cell service, no phone lines of any kind, no TV.  So, when I want to find my cell phone I can no longer call it I am SOL until I come across it again wherever it landed.

As promised, I will share a video of something that never happened to me when I was playing the part of a city girl.  Please note, the house is not nearly done and it is a mess.  (I’m a female so I have to point that out.)

That hasn’t ever happened to me before.
